I'm starting to see a thin layer of moss growing on my roof. I've never dealt with this problem before. How do you get rid of it, and more importantly, how do you prevent it?

Hi Lucy..
Sunlight will kill it .
You can mix a little bleach with water, just a little chlorox mixed with water will do it.. Spray a lite mix on it and it will kill and bleach it out.
There is also a relatively 'safe' herbicide 'carmex' that can be mixed and used to kill moss, it is generally used in water ways to kill and control moss and algae...
With a little on your roof, occasionally spraying with bleach diluted, will keep it under control. You might also try giving it more sunlight... :smile:KennyV

Yeah, as Kenny says, you can make the days longer and possibly turn your house on the foundation to make the sunlight hit your shingles more....

I have never had the problem as none of our roofs are shaded enough to create moss, but the sprayer method using bleach and water will do the trick. Don't even think about using a power washer to clean the moss off, high pressure will remove the shingle granules as well as the moss.

I suppose that is possible...BUT the usual thing that starts moss growth is lack of sunlight brought on by shade from trees and other vegetation...
if you thin that out allowing more sunshine and air circulation... THAT may help to eliminate it before it gets a good start...

bleach or carmex WILL definitely kill it... :smile:KennyV

We have had very slippery roofs and I believe it was from moss or something like it. I think the lack of sunlight might be a factor because at the time we had two very big oak trees. One was cut down and no one has complained about the slippery roof since.
