My friend just gave me his MTD Yardman riding mower. He quit using it because it needed a part, but since it was missing the model# ID tag under the seat, he just parked it & bought another instead of trying to figure out the model to order parts. So, now it's mine & Im looking to determine the model.

Here are the specs I do know:
42" cut
Hydrostatic transmission
Briggs & Stratton 17HP OHV Intek engine
Engine model#311777
Engine Type 0120-E1
Engine code 990909ZE

Any help in identifying my model is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Not as hard as it looks.
From the engine serial number the motor is a 1999 model so your Yardman could span 1999 to 2000
slipping over to jacks Small Engines ( or partstree.com if you like ) and using the parts look up for MTD
Parts Lookup - Exploded Diagrams for Outdoor Power Equipment
Scroll down the models to find Yardman which happens to be on the bottom
MTD Parts Lookup by Jacks Small Engines
From the yardman look up page, select "13 lawn tractors". !3 will be the first 2 numbers in our model number which is MTD's code for small ride ons.
MTD 13-Lawn Tractors Exploded View Parts Lookup by Model
From the engine serial number the first 2 numbers are the short year so you are looking at 99 or 2000 from the above page you can select both 1999 & 2000.
You will see 12 models for 1999 and 6 for 2000.
From there you could open each of the models and look for one which looks the same as yours, jot down the parts numbers, check next year as well to see if the parts have the same number and you are relatively confident of ordering the right part.
Now to narrow down things a bit the 42" deck is designated as G so you now have 13????G????
And that hood style is 604
So you are now checking out all the 13??604G??? which is down to 4 models for 1999 and 2 for 2000

Some on posted the full mdel code break down for MTD machines but I can't find where I put it,

I will do you one better you have a 2000 13AD604G401 It is the only model within the two year time span that used the model type and code of your engine.

wow, thanks guys. I didn't think it would be that simple, since my friend let it sit to rot & bought another mower when he lost the model # tag. Once I'm certain it still runs & drives ok, I can now order the new blade shafts. I appreciate it very much! My old central park mower was stolen, so I was mowerless for this season. I'm going to miss the rear discharge the Central had, but this mower has a much larger deck & should be a breeze to drive compared to that old gal lol.

So you obviously have access to the engine letter decoder.
Is this available ?
Are they static or did they reuse letters ?

Not exactly simple when you don't have access to dealer websites but a learned technique that works for most every mower.
Down here we got a lot of imported mowers rebranded with a local mower companies name
Even worse they oft brought 2 or more models in a particular year from different makers so we have a year when Victa marketed 5 ride ons from 5 different companies.
The company having changed hands several times no records are available ( and they would not tell you even if they were ) so it becomes a nightmare trying to find parts for a 15 year old mower.

For Dealers with access to the MTD dealer site, you can put in a model number like you are looking up parts, and then open the attibutes portion normally listed under the illustrated parts list tab, and on most mowers they will give you the engine model info used on that model.

Thought that might be the case.
Being a franchised dealer must have some advantages.
I am in an affiliation to access a lot of parts info but in reallitiy the only eal difference to Joe public is I get to print ot the full page not just the portion on the scene.
Thanks just the same.
