my 2186 had a mouse have babies under the cowl that goes over the spark plug, the mother
and the babies got fried but she stuffed so much junk everywhere the engine overheated
and blew the right side head gasket. How bad a job is it to replace a head gasket? How about
a complete engine, maybe a used one? The engine is a Kohler CH18S, spec #62601. thanks,

Not a bad job replacing the head gasket, but it is a very good chance the new gasket wouldn't last seeing you over heated the engine. I would say replace the head as well as the gasket. Also check the block for being warped.
You shouldn't have to remove the engine. You might have to remove the flywheel shroud . Also sometimes its a little easier to work on the engine if you remove the hood from the chassis.
