using a know good battery hook up a jumper lead to the thick red wire that goes to the starter being carefull not to touch the body of the starter to the + of the battery.
hook this wire up first then run the other jumper from the battery to a good earth, I like to use the oil drain plug.
You will ge a big spark when you do which is why you doo it in the order listed.
If the motor spins the engine it is good.

Now my turn.
Why do you ask this question ?

Well I don't really need to tell you what you have already worked out for yourself.
Pull the starter off and pull the starter apart.
Two very long & thin bolts that come out the bottom.
Next tap off the bottom cover.
I do this inside a carton because there is a good chance a spring will take a short flight.
If you are lucky it will be a worn down brush or crud shorting out the brushes or the main power feed fallen off.

You can buy replacement brush packs they are not particularly expensive if the comutator looks good & tests out OK.

However you will need to get the appropriate bible to do the job & for that we will ned to know which religion the engine is.

Rule out solenoid, loose wiring including grounds, relays, safety switches before removing starter.
Remove negative cable from battery & tuck away from negative post, remove starter & take to auto parts store & have them perform " starter draw test" should not cost you anything.

how many amps should there be i had it tested and they said 43amps they did not know what should be
