I removed the exhaust pipe which had broken from the old muffler. Now a used muffler from ebay will not go in place. The bent exhaust pipe binds and prevents prevents both holes on the mounting flange from engaging the studs. Do I have to remove engine from mower frame to get it to fit?

If you can verify that you did indeed get the correct muffler from ebay, AND it won't go on, then it may be necessary to remove or at least loosen the engine from its mounts to get the clearance you need.
First and foremost, verify that this good used muffler from ebay is the right one.
Mufflers are generally specific to the mower and not the engine as they have to fit in a particular spot.
This is why most replacement engines do not have a muffler.
I seriously doubt that JD designed a mower where you need to remove the engine to replace the muffler.
Thanks to those who have responded. You have reflected my own opinion. They should not have designed things to be non-self-serviced. I got it on and bolted in place. It took a bit of effort and intelligence but I made it. Thanks again!! geowash.
