That's fairly common on small engines, the piston is like a plunger going down into the cylinder/crankcase and you've given that extra air somewhere to go and takes oil with it.
there aren't any other issues with it are there?

Surging not a smooth idle.

That's a dirty carburetor running lean. more specifically a dirty idle circuit in the carburetor.
