Mower ran fine 1 week ago and now it starts up and after 5 minutes it starts to backfire and shut off. I let it cool down and it starts up, runs fine for a few minutes and shuts down. Fuel is new. Seems like once it gets warm it shuts down.

Anyone have any suggestions? Would a bad coil cause this to happen?

GiL - I have an LT1000 with a B&S engine, a 2005 model. I had a situation where it would shut off after 10 minutes. I found my choke was in the "closed" position and not opening up. I drilled a little hole and added a return spring from the hardware store to the choke "arm", easier than shutting off the LT1000 and getting out and moving the choke lever by hand, and better than adding a strong string to open the choke from the driver's seat.

Thank you Cusser and love your profile pic! What are you drinking? I will check the choke "arm".

Close the choke partially when it acts up. See if the engine smooths out. Try more and less choke to keep her running.

To me this sounds like water in the gas.

You mentioned you only use rec fuel. What is that? Reclaimed???? Reused?

Thank you for the feedback!

Rec fuel - recreational fuel; REC-90—is ethanol-free;

Swapping out the ignition coil. Keep you posted.

REC 90 sounds like E-10 to me. I have no clue what you are using.

Do you buy this at a lake or something? Farmers fuel pump? I hope they sell enough to keep fresh gas in their tanks. If not, be on the lookout for water in your tank and fuel can. Or stale fuel???

Hi slomo,

In my area of South Texas, we simply have non-Ethanol for small engine equipment and old carburetor vehicles, or we have the E-10 selections for everything else that is fuel injected.

Never heard of "REC 90" around here, that must be a regional term.

Here is a link I found online:

I'm Florida and it is a pretty common fuel type. It is the only fuel I use on my boat as well as small engine equipment. It's definitely pricier but I think worth.
