LT1000 alarm noise?

My LT1000 developed a noise that is best described as an "buzzing alarm." I disconnected the negative cable and it stopped. I thought it may be something that needed to reset so I touched the cable to the terminal and the noise continued and the starter activated. I then took the key out of the switch and touching the negative to the battery still allowed the mower to try to start. I disconnected the positive cable also just to be sure the electrical is okay.

What would make this noise?
Why would the starter circuit work with the key out?

Thanks for your insights

the buzz is probably a relay
IT is buzzing because either it is bad or you have a short some where in the wiring.
I have difficulty in getting my hands on Craftsman wiring diagrams but hopefully some one in the USA will post one

Well giving us the actual model from serial tag under the seat (starting with 917. or 247.) would definitely help finding wiring schematic. I hate those Layman model numbers that OEM put their for the dumb consumers.

Here is a random LT1000 wiring diagram.
