Have you ever grown up thinking you know the name of something to discover that was a made up name that your family used for that item? Is there such a tool as loppers? The things with a long handle that has short curved metal blades that you use to trim trees.

Yes they are Loppers... you can get either Anvil or bypass loppers.

Haha, in this case your family did not mislead you although I do know what you are talking about. At my house we always had flipper flopper's. I was 17 at a friends house when I learned that there is no such thing. The real name was remote control! I just thought I must have been very thick!
