I live on .35 acres, currently i have an old 21" cut murry push mower i got at a garage sale for $25.
it gets the job done, but smokes and doesn't handle my rough yard very well.

I am thinking about a self propelled walk behind mower for under $400. I started looking into Toro's as my grandpa always used and loved them, but it seems the newer models have a lot of bad reviews. I hear people complain about the easy start (no choke and primer) engines not being so easy to start, and the drive systems not holding up. I really like the idea of the personal pace system that Toro has now, but all the negative reviews makes me think maybe i should look at a different brand.

My yard is pretty flat in terms of elevation, but it is rough in spots. The people who lived here before me didnt take care of the house or yard what so ever, and to top it off the ground is clay and the back yard has serious drainage problems (i'm working on that).

So what would you guys recommend for a sub $400 walk behind? preferably self propelled, and 21 in cut or bigger. I'm not opposed to something used if it is known to be a solid machine.

I have two old Toro's that have to be 25 years or older. I bought then both used. They both run as good as the day I brought them home other then the wheels are getting loose on one. Don't know how the newer ones are but the older Toro's run forever.
