I see that but parts stores list the same 13AJ609G766 as a 2004 as well. Hence my confusion. There has to be some other way to determine whether it is 04 or 05. Maybe the engine serial number?

Maybe a call to the manufacturer??

Get us the numbers off the engine. It will have a date code. The reason it is listed 2004-2005 is that it was built for 2 years. One single model number means no changes. If something is changed them model numbers also change. Now that is how it is supposed to be but not every company works that way. Some have changes by serial number. MTD does not that I know of.
There is no year code in the model number 13AJ609G766
13 = ride on tractor
A = retail code
J = Engine code
6 = frame size ( 600 series )
0 = transmission type
9 = style of bodywork
G = Deck size & type
766 = end users product code
The year code is in the serial number 1c285h20137 was that on your mower ?
1 = update number so 1 is as first designed
c = month code a-l ( Jan to Dec ) so c is March
28 = day of the month so build date is now March 28
5 = last number of the year so it is now March 28 2005/2015 ( cause this coding started in 1997 )
h = factory where it was made
2 = the production line in factory h that the machine made on.
0137 = sequence number so it was the 137th made on that line.
So now you know, go find the tag on your mower and work it out.
