I have a briggs Stratton 20HP on a craftsman DLS3600. model number of engine is 31p977 type 0635E1

Engine is smoking horrible, clanking, leaking oil. Instead of repairing...I'd rather just replace. Not sure if I can get a bigger engine (which would be nice) or if I have to source the same engine. I have noticed in some of my searches of specific length and teeth of gear, but can't find that info on mine? I have looked around online and can't find my exact engine for sale from any place that offers warranty. found one on ebay, but seller is not willing to ship. any help suggestions...

You can go bigger if you want to.

Most any engine will bolt right up but you would have to re wire it You can go with any brand does not have to be a Briggs

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

I know most engines i have searched have some critical info that im not sure how to answer from my current
Engine specs- Length Crankshaft, Tapped and Key. I guess if I knew that info or where to find it on my current engine I could source another engine that would match up.

Just take your model and type numbers to your local Briggs & Stratton repair shop. They will be able to cross reference those numbers and answer any questions. If you deal with them and you have any problems making if work you will have some recourse in solving your problems.

The shaft should be 1" x 3 5/32 . Any Briggs up to 26 hp should fit just make sure the shaft is the correct length, and diameter.
