I have a john deere d170 it will only run in choke position , will die if you throttle down

Yes a good chance it does, if it had fuel in it while sitting the carb is more than likely gummed up, if you are not going to use much or for an extended time shut fuel off (if it has one) and run till gas is gone out of carb, also put some fuel stabilizer in tank and try to find gas with no ethanol in it.
Just remember to turn gas back on next time (I cranked and cranked one time trying to figure out what was wrong) 

Forgot to add try and by gas with no ethanol in it, if you don't have fuel shut off add stabilizer to fuel and once or twice a month run engine till its up to temp, that way the stabilizer will help by cleaning the carb.
