Lawnboy 10525 Serial #9902098 No Tension on Pull Cord

Went to start subject and pull cord was normal on first pull but no start. Pulled cord a second time and there was no tension on the cord. First thought was that the metal hooks that grab the starter cup were damaged or that the cup itself was worn. Removed both but no apparent damage. Replaced the recoil shroud and the starter cup with a known good used unit and no change. When you spin the cutting blade by hand the recoil does turn and some pressure is required to turn it so I don't think the blade shaft is broken nor is there a loss of engine compression. I'm at a loss. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

More that likely the starter pawls are either worn or gummed out. Depending on your expertise and experience they can be cleaned or replaced.

Thanks for the feedback. The pawls on both the original and the replacement are metal but I suspect both were not coming our far enough. Maybe because they are gummed up. Unfortunately for me I already dropped off the mower at my local shop for them to have a look at it. I'll update the post when I find out what the fix is.

Hi Rivets, are you aware of any outlet that sells the pawls by themselves. I can't find anything on line. Thanks in advance.

Very uncommon to find them worm. Only found worn pawls once or twice. When I did I just went to one of my bone yards and found a used starter to get them from.

If you still had the machine, here is what I would do to fix it, if only temporarily. Spray carb cleaner into the pivot points of both pawls and blow them out with air. Use a needle oil applicator like this and lubricate the pawl pivot points as well as dripping some down the center shaft so the pawl opener moves freely. The dealer/repair shop will simply replace the recoil assembly, as that is the correct way to eliminate the problem. They are not expensive, and the problem is solved.
