I have a fairly old John Deere 160 which I use to cut my lawn, maybe a bit less than an acre. I have a bagger attachment, but it doesn't work well unless the grass is short and bone dry. Any height to it, or trying to bag in the early season when the grass is growing well, it constantly clogs and jams. I'm 57, and getting on and off, cleaning out the chute so many times is getting old like me.

I can't afford a new mower, my JD still runs and cuts well anyway! So I'm thinking about a sweeper. I collect the grass to mulch down our gardens, it's the best thing. We have quite a bit of garden, so I try to collect as much as possible.

I've done a search here, seems like there are as many pros and cons. What I don't want to do is buy a POS cheepie that won't last or more important, won't work! I remember back when I bought my JD, there was a guy in the dealer who was looking at a sweeper, he wanted to sweep up those prickly gum ball/burs, and most sweepers wouldn't get them. But the JD sweeper evidently did. Back then I recall the sweeper being about 400 bucks.

So I'm looking for advice. I would also use it for leaves, but that's not my main focus.

I don't have any personal experience with any lawn sweepers, but I can direct you to a few websites that have reviews from people that have used them. Here are a few websites:
  1. Pull behind lawn sweepers - MyTractorForum.com - The Friendliest Tractor Forum and Best Place for Tractor Information
  2. Lawn Sweeper, Tow Behind, mostly for damp grass grass - reccomendations please,
  3. Lawn Sweepers @ Leaf Blowers Direct.com - Leaf Sweepers, Grass Sweeper, Lawn Sweepers, Leaf Sweeper, Grass Sweepers, Lawn Sweeper, Yard Sweeper, Yard Sweepers <--You can look at a few reviews here

Good luck and make sure you tell us what you are leaning towards and what you decide on!

A bagger attachment always works better than a lawn sweeper, and there's no moving parts to break on the bagger. I think you need some different blades on your mower. Maybe the blade with the bolt on wings that people say fill the bag TOO fast! Another idea is a fan forced outlet bagger. If you want to try a lawn sweeper though, don't even look at anybody's but Brinly's. They sent me a part within a week......FREE!......and Agri-Fab didn't even respond to my email. They both are about as good as you'll find and probably make John Deere stuff also.
