My 2000, Scotts 1742 lawn tractor won't start. Turn the switch, nothing. This is the second time around. That was the story a couple weeks ago. Battery had a bad cell. Replaced battery, rapid ticking sound on turning the key. Went to JD dealership, picked up a new solenoid, replaced it, and my mower started right up. Mowed the lawn, put the tractor away. Went to mow the lawn yesterday, nothing. New battery, new solenoid, one mowing and now I'm back to a silent, immobile lawn tractor and a rapidly growing lawn. Any thoughts?

Of course...check you battery again.

Make sure all safety requirements are met...these prevent lawn mower from doing anything.

From the limited information you posted it sounds like the charging system on your engine is not working so the battery is being drained while you mow.
Some voltage readings on the battery would be good.
Can also be dirty , corroded or loose battery wires ( remember there are 2 of them nit just the red one ) can also cause similar problems and flattening the battery dead flat can cause a cell to drop out if it is not recharged properly.
A ticking solenoid is a sign of under voltage , not a faulty solenoid.

Jump start the engine and get some readings of the voltage at the battery, engine off and engine running at full speed.

Post the results and we will take it from there.

An engine make & model number will be of grat assistance as will the model number of your mower off the tag.

Computers and public forums have one thing in common,,,,,
You only get out according to what you put in.
Tell us nothing and all you will get is every ones pet problem.
Give us enough information to work out what is wrong and you will et sound information.
Decision is yours.
