The pinion and rack gear need to be replaced most likely. The deck has to be removed, and the mower raised up enough for access to the components. I would advise replacing the drive belt and small pullies also while you are this far into the operations.
They are not very difficult, take plenty of pictures before disassembly. You will need a set of basic tools and snap ring pliers if you don't have any.
