Tractor started right away, no issues. I was cutting grass for about 1/2 hour. Engine backfires and stops. Raised blade housing and disengaged the mower blades. Started and ran 5 min. Now it will not start. Turnsover effortlessly, Smells of gas but will not fire up or even sputter. Fuel present from the tank to circular black module with 3 ports on motor. fuel in line from, circular black module, 3 ports, to carb sol.
By turns over effortlessly to you mean faster than normal with no hesitations at all ?
If so pull the spark plug and crank the engine.
If it seems to be turning at the same speed, plug is as plug out then you have a valve / cam problem .
Pull off the rocker cover and turn the engine over by hand while watching the valves.
Every 2 revolutions they should go in & out the same amount as each other and end up sitting at the same level.
If that looks good poke some thing down the plug hole and push down on the piston while rotating the engine.
It should go up & down smoothly.
Might have sheared the flywheel key as well. Also it might have broken the piston rod arm. How much oil is in the motor.

From your tank to the Black Module with the 3 ports is your fuel pump.....
IF you want to see if your getting gas to your carb then take the fuel line off of the carb then spin your engine over... You should see gas squirting out of the fuel line.........
I don't think that's your problem though........ That won't make a engine spin freely.....
Bert is right about checking the push rod travel on your valves.......
When it backfired your flywheel key could have sheared and maybe you flywheel is just spinning loose and not actually turning your crank shaft..... That is what Luff dog is getting at........
If a push rod came off the rocker then you don't have any compression.....
