Kohler pro hp will not start

I have a Craftsman LTZ 1000 mower with a Kohler Pro 18HP engine that will not start. It has not run for 2 years so I assumed that the carb was gummed up too badly to pass fuel correctly, it also dumped fuel past the solenoid and messed up the oil. I replaced the carb, changed the oil and plug. Still no joy. I verified that the plug is getting spark and that fuel is getting to the cylinder. I am out of ideas. I am told that there is a key that holds the flywheel to the crank that might be sheared. How can I prove this?

Straitness of the deck has nothing to do with where anything is except the cutting tips of the blades.
Measure them to the ground, the bodywork means nothing
