kohler kt735 oil leak

I have a 2015 TroyBilt Super Bronco 50" deck with a Kohler KT735 engine (240 hours) I noticed a small oil leak around the left valve cover at the end of last cutting season. Parked it for the winter. Now it is blowing oil out of the muffler on the left side. Obviously, oil is getting past the rings and on top of the piston and I'm not sure what parts to replace. I'm thinking a head gasket set and rings. Any suggestions? I know that sometimes there are aftermarket parts available that are better than the factory parts. Looking for info on quality parts as well. TIA

Dip the oil and tell us what the level is .
Smell it to see if it smells like fuel
rub it between your finger to see if it feels thin or hard
Get back with the findings

Oil level may be a little high. very slightly above full notch
It does smell like gas
Feels thinner than normal

The float valve on the carb has failed and allowed fuel to enter the sump
First remove the carb & clean it
You may need a new needle &/or seat
Then once the carb is good replace the oil.
Mow about 15 minutes or so and change the oil again + the filter
Get an in line fuel tap and turn the fuel off when over wintering your mower or drain both the carb & tank completely

Thanks for the info. I will follow those instructions this weekend and let you know what happens.

Finally got around to following your advice. Changing the oil and cleaning the carb stopped the smoking. I cut grass for a few minutes and drained the oil. It was super thin. Way thinner than the first time. It ran rough as well. I found a vacuum line that I left disconnected under the air filter housing. I'm guessing that's why it ran rough. I'm putting fresh oil in it and a new filter. I'll let you know what happens. Really appreciate the advice.
