I have been repairing my own equipment for 60 years but this troubleshooting problem has me mystified. Need advice. Last year, with seven years of use, my Kohler Courage SV 740 engine began to mis-fire randomly/intermittently on the left side. A new plug made no difference. thinking it may be the ignition module, ordered a set, replace the OEM with new one, made no difference. Still misfiring. Then it failed completely but still ran on right side, which also failed a few days later. Ignition Modules did not solve the problem. Although doubtful, and since I could not get any definite information on the magnet failing, I ordered a new flywheel, since there are rare cases of the magnet failure. New flywheel mounted normally, new modules installed, still NO SPARK either side. Tried several gap settings, checked all components related to ignition (stop wire, etc.) It is like the laws of physics have been suspended for this engine  ! Any ideas from anyone ?? Thanks !

First problem, a valve was out of adjustment?

What can you do but go back and put some/all of the old parts back on and recheck everything as you do that.

Go here "K&T Parts House Lawn Mower Parts and Chain Saw & Trimmer Parts" and download the service manual for your engine.
Find the wiring diagram and work out where to disconnect the kill wires for the coils then check for a spark.
Never had to do this job on a Kohler but on the B & S they have a diode on the kill wire between the cylinders and when this goes bad you ge the exact set of symptoms you describe.
However the B & S coils have the module in the coil & I think the Kohlers have the module ( points replacements ) external thus the suggestion to check the wiring diagram.

Disconnect the coil "kill" wire(s) and check for spark.
