I have a couple Kohler commands on the bench both for sure need head gaskets and sump gaskets. Both around 1000 hours. Is there a way to test the rings? Or should I just plan on replacing those with the amount of hours? Thanks

Rent a Compression Test Kit from OReilly's etc. to test engine compression, you should get all your money back.

They should run a lot more than 1000 hours
The landlord has a fleet of 2000 series Cubs with Kohlers in them way over 2000 hours on all of them and one pushing 3000
And that is the ones that work.

They get use to mow the paddocks after the livestock have eaten down all that they want to or when the tussock grass gets too high
Also for mowing around the orchard .
If you need rings at under 1000 hours then he air filters have not been serviced properly or oil not changed regularly enough.
