I just rebuilt a 99 Kohler CH25 with SAM ignition. I tested the ignition modules with a multimeter and it looks like they are in spec (although I am not 100% convinced the readings are correct). I used a spark tester on both modules and a couple of times I would get a spark. Nothing consistent, though, and the spark appeared very weak. I isolated the coils from the rest of the electrical system--nothing. Changed the flywheel --nothing.
I had a replacement motor to swap parts, so that gave me four ignition coils. I can't believe that all four ignition coils are bad. I can't get a spark to save my soul. The engine does have the SAM, but if the coils are isolated from the rest of the wiring system, shouldn't I get a spark?
Has anyone run into this issue and then resolved it? Any info is greatly appreciated.
You can't isolate the ignition system with the SAM system. the ignition modules actually have to have 12 V to the module to operate. Either you are not getting power to the SAM or the SAM may be at fault, if you don't have fire on either cylinder with the system connected properly.
