Kohler Bendix washers

I ordered a Bendix rebuild kit off eBay for my Toro mower with a Kohler engine. I notice the parts diagrams show two washers (photo attached) that go on the shaft just under the gear. Those washers are missing from my old starter and not included in pictures in any of the rebuild kits.

Do I just not need those? Does any sell them separately or know where I can order them?

Which Kohler engine do you have? Model and spec numbers would be helpful.

Yes, but I also ordered a whole new starter separately. I plan to just replace the Bendix on the original and keep it for a backup. But the original starter doesn’t have those two washers and neither did the rebuild kit. As far as I can tell none of the online kits have them and my local parts dealer says Kohler doesn’t sell parts to service that starter anymore.

Here’s a short term fix from a guy on YouTube. He mentions (at 6:15 in) the washers are sometimes missing… so I wonder if I can just go without.

To my knowledge the Courage engine did not use the spacer washers between the Bendix drive washer and the Bendix gear. My opinion is you’ll be fine without them.

Just an update. New starter came in and works great.

The Bendix rebuild kit also came in and I put it on the old starter. I swapped it out just to check. It works but still hangs up a little. I guess for $20 it’s okay to keep as a backup. I put the new starter back on and will just hang on to the old one with the rebuilt Bendix.
