So I've got a kohler 18hp spec. 27506. It won't start, I replace the fly wheel key which was sheered and it barely runs some times. Any ideas? It has hydrolic lifters so that's out. I just rebuilt the carb, and have tried all the normal starting tricks. so now I'm lost...
Any ideas? I'm thinking timing but i do not know how to check it.

Ok so I just took the motor apart, all if the gears where lined up correctly, everything looks ok, there is a lot of black carbon build up on the valves and piston head, but that's about all....

Update..... Reassembled engine when I run the throttle from choke to it's lowest setting it and back to choke repeatedly runs barely spits sputters backfires etc, also I must keep moving it up and down rapidly. Carb issue?

Solved: did not get the fly wheel bolt tight enough the first time  ! Sheared the key again. All that work over rushing to get done....
