Key will not stop a Murray 46300B 18HP

Happy Saturday!

Working on a 2002 Murray with a BS 18HP engine.

Someone had cut most of the wires - then run a short circuit to the solenoid and melted it.

Found a bad clutch switch and got the mower started.

but it will not stop with the key? Had to short out the plugs to stop it.

Why wouldn't the key stop the motor? I must be missing something easy.

The wiring diagram is here.

Thanks..

Could be just a bad switch -- or if someone had shorted wires the contacts in the switch could be pitted or burned -- If you have a meter check the continuity in the switch with key on and off (take the connector off the switch first). Check all your wiring for proper continuity. I'm guessing since you have the wiring diagram you understand continuity.

Try some contact cleaner (Radio Shack - Auto Parts) in the switch key hole and operate the switch several times.

Thanks for the response...

What is that shuts the engine off when you turn the key off?

When the key is shut off it shorts the coil to ground.

When I tested the ignition switch I found that there was no continuity at any time between the yellow circuit and any other circuit. If the switch is open to the yellow circuit would that be the problem?

Probably, but your wiring diagram labeling is not complete.

Solved: Key will not stop a Murray 46300B 18HP

I found the problem: the terminal on the spade of the magneto was just loose enough where it was not getting a good ground... Thanks for the help!
