I inherited my father-in-law's Scag 48" walk behind and I intend to repower it. Right now, there is no engine and no accompanying drive pulley assembly. The model of the frame is sw48 14 ka. The original engine was a Kawasaki 14hp, recoil start with a manual clutch (fc420v). I've contacted about 10 different manufacturers of replacement engines and so far three have returned my inquiries.
The two engines they've suggestd are a Kohler 21hp recoil start (v-twin) for $800 or a Kawasaki 14.5hp v-twin for $1000. I know they no longer make Kawasaki single cylinders anymore and apparently my choices for replacement engines are limited because of the recoil start and the manual clutch.
The mower will be for residential use only so I'm wondering which engine you'd recommend and if you've had any experience with repowering a mower. Thanks.

Kohler is having some quality issues with the small (vertical shaft) V-twins. They are blowing up, with little hours on them. Not all, but I know of plenty that have. Just a FYI.

I know of several people in my area that have mowers with Kohlers that have had significant problems with them. I have never heard that about a Kawasaki. I have Three Scags with Kawasaki motors and have had no problem with any of them. One of them has approx 1000 hours on it. One has approx 800 hours on it and one is new with less than 100.
As far as I am concerned it is a no brainer. Kawasaki.

Scaq is commercial are the Kohlers also commercial? You need to compare apples to apples.
