Help.
I have a John Deere STX38 riding mower.
I was mowing the lawn and all of a sudden the blades stopped turning. Everything else was normal and running correctly. The belt is fine, the switch is on but it just stopped turning.
Any idea what is wrong. I looked under the deck and there is a large silver thing, maybe a clutch, just below the deck which was very hot when I touched it and slightly burnt my finger. Is this the blade clutch? I can't remember if there were wires or not to it.
Any ideas on what is wrong and possible costs?

WELCOME to LMF...

The PTO clutch Is Above the Deck... But it is Below the engine...

The only silver thing that may be hot Under the Deck as you stated is a blade spindle, If you have a bad spindle bearing it could get hot...

Look again to see if this part is Above OR below the deck... :smile:KennyV

I don't have experience with John Deere, however if it is electric pto clutch then they will NOT engage without 12v.
If your battery voltage drops below 12v then the clutch will shut off, though my mower will still start/run.
I got so tired of messing with those small batteries I finally replaced mine with a good quality car battery and eventually an optima redtop.

Not sure if thats your problem, but might be worth hooking jumper cables to it while running to see if the clutch will engage with the extra amps/voltage maybe.
