John Deere won't shut off.

My neighbor has a John Deere LX255 with 15hp Kohler that won't shut off. Removed shroud and ran engine. Grounded tab on coil to ground and stayed running. Tried another coil. Did the same thing. Anyone ever see this before? Thanks for any help.
 
Thank you for the reply. Made sure tab was clean and grounded to coil frame, then to engine block and then to battery negative.
 
I have never seen two coils in a row that will not shut off the ignition spark when the tab was grounded. The grounding tab could have a broken winding inside the coil.
