Looking to repair steering problem on my John Deere stx 38 yet need schematics just in case there is more to it than replacing the bushing. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks

May as well replace the pinion and sector gear, that's never been greased, while it's apart.

Cynic.
If I have serviced it the bush got lubed but yes I do get a lot of flogged out never been lubed lower bushes on a lot more than just JD's

Lubing the steering gears is another topic all together. Some say to lube the gears, others say don't. Third opinion is to use graphite. The opinion is using grease will reduce the wear in the gears, but with all the dust and grime of mowing the grease will collect the grit and turn it into sandpaper. What's your thoughts?

My thoughts on the subject is; there is dirt / dust there whether we grease or not grease. Now a decision needs to be made whether we want dry dirt / dust or lubricated. I choose lubricated for bushings and steering gears alike. They just last longer and we can tell they will because it makes steering easier.

Either foaming O ring chain oil or drying spray lithium chassis grease.
Very occasionally to some that are impossible to get at a few drops of Tri-Flow pipetted in using some fine fuel line.
But always lubed, after washing down or I will miss a badly worn bush and have an angry customer biting lumps off my butt when the "just serviced " mower smacks into a wall because the steering is US

Mine runs backwards fine...cannot turn right or left in forward. Found a a large washer on the ground....everything seems to be connected. I am too old to be lifting it, but suspect the bushing or gear might be bad. Any way to tell by looking and feeling what the problem is?
Thanks
