John deere S240 Transmission Won't engage

I have had this mower for a number of years. I was doing a cutting this year and it stopped. The transmission act the the engagement lever is in the dis-engaged position, which it is not. I removed the mower deck and I can manual move the lever at the transmission. In both positions (engage and unengaged ) the wheell move by hand . The foot control is soft. I have read this can be caud by low level of transmission fluid. The only fluid dip stick i can fine is for motor oil. Every manual talks about a sight gauge. which I can not find. Yes I iam stupd

Interesting this is the first I have seen about that . Everything else has reference checking the transmission resservour Removing the trans axle well above my skill level. time for a pro i guess
 
Sometimes that owners manual that gets File 13 is important as it says the transaxle is a sealed unit which there is no operator maintenance of it including adding and check its oil.

Btw with a lot of hours on it, it can be the drive belt and idlers pulleys.

File 13 = Trash canned.
 
my manul clearly discusses the need to check fluid level refetriing to a resourvor.. i cant find one So this is clearly beyond me. There is a mechanic uo the road. .
 
The JD owner/operator manuals are basically poorly edited/ reworked 20-year-old reprints that give only very basic information. They are often not model specific regardless of the cover on the book.

The Drive belt and pullies need to be checked to make sure they are not broken or gone bad. That would be more common than the transmission simply quitting.

The differentials are sealed and most dealer will just replace them and not service them.

Good Luck finding any independent mower shops that will even attempt to service these, especially if it has some age on it.
 
Thanks you for your response even if all doom and gloom I am assuming that differential and trans axle are the same . The belt is intact but I guess it is bad. Dealer service is possible but wrong time of year to gat a service call. They are busy with commercial work and I dont have a trailer to take the unit to them . Yes the manuals suck since I have found iit possible to find the location for the transmission fluid reservoir but if transmission is truly sealed unit then I doubt there will be one. I will go talk to my local repair shop. (we have several) one of whioh has been quite helpful in the pat. Seem smarter to deal with him then try to change the drive belt my self
