Hi, I have a John Deere LT 170 V twin 16 hp, single carb. It sat for 3 years, I cleaned the carb, cleaned the fuel tank and it fired right up. I mowed with it and the next time I started it it would bog down, I pulled the choke out and it would run but not let the blades engage. I pulled the carb and cleaned it again. Now the only way it will start is by squirting gas into the carb, when that runs out it dies. I'm not getting any fuel out of the fuel pump at all. I'm stumped.

The fuel pump has a check valve on the output side ( one by itself ) so firstly make sure it is hooked up properly.
Blow through the inlet you should be able to blow through with a little resistance.
While you are there , pull the cap off the fuel tank and blow back into the tank from the intake line.
There should be no resistance.
The hose in the top ( centre if you like ) is the pulse line, when the engine is running you should see or feel pulses coming out of it.

Not sure if yours is like mine but.... My L130 started vapor locking and losing power at 600 hours. I checked everything, all looked good. I put on a new fuel pump and replaced the big automotive sized Kohler filter with a Stens small engine filter. Now running fine. I cut the old pump apart and it had a whitish looking build up on the rubber disc valves that probably was causing them to lose seal and not pump and the big filter was probably drawing heat and letting the gas vaporize.

I put a new fuel pump on it. I'm thinking of running a new fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump.

One last thing you can try, sounds weird but works sometimes. Maybe need to prime the system. I take off the gas cap, blow into the tank to pressurize it and push gas through the lines and into the carb. Worth a try anyway.
