HELP !!!
I have a john Deere L100 that has been very well cared for. 140 hours. This year tune up, oil change, gas filter, air filter, starter, 2 safety switches, on and on, have spent over $250.00 in parts. Recently sounded like exhaust was going bad so like a fool did not even check just ordered entire new exhaust and installed today. Not the problem. Still sounds like bad exhaust but poping noise and backfiring occasionally from front carb area of briggs 17 hp. Will run mower deck but will barely cut even the shortest grass. Sounds like running old mower without air filter. Moved out to country to enjoy my time after cancer diagnosis and can't even mow the lawn. Really frustrated. ANY helpful ideas would be appreciated but no I cant afford to get a new one. Thanks in advance.

I would start by checking the valve clearances. Should be .004-.006. Make sure that both valves are going through there full range of motion, sometimes have seen cases where one of the lobes of the camshaft will were down and not open one of the valves fully.

say ilengine I hate to impose more but any idea how much and where to get a rebuilt or used engine?
I don't know if I am up to doing all that but money may decide it for me if I can get one reasonable enough. Thanks again so very much. Be well.

bax, sorry to bother you but did you get it fixed? i have the same problem but it won't start and backfires when i try to start it if i change the fuel level using the throttle lever.

the way it sounds i may need to get rid of the mower and have to buy a new one since i don't have time to tear it down.

WELCOME TO LMF!
Bax has not been on LMF since May 20th so you might not get a response from him, but others might be able to help.
Good luck!

I'm thinking could be one of three things.

1) The flywheel has sheared the key and is firing the plug(s) at the wrong time.
2) A valve is stuck open or is randomly sticking.
3) The camshaft has jumped time.

But then again it could be something that I'm not thinking of right now. Good luck!
