So, my D170 has a yellow knob that you pull up to engage the mower blades. Suddenly this has become loose; the knob drops back down and dis-engages while mowing, and the whole structure (under the dash) is just wiggly and loose. I was expecting to see some sort of screws, bolts, something to tighten, but no ------ there is just a black box with no discernible connection, moving slightly.

Any ideas????? Thanks !

These are snap fitted so they are only held in place by tension.

Given that photo you've attached, it looks like maybe I need to push up from the underside while pushing down on the knob or that rectangular collar?? I'll give that a try in awhile. IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, then what's next ----- get to the dealer and have the whole thing replaced? Thanks !

The switch is not repairable as it is glued together , if not welded .
so push it down from the top
Squeeze the barbs on the ends in
Then push it up from the bottom
There are 7 common PTO switches and no 2 will interchange so make sure you get the correct one
John Deere have their parts diagrams on line .
Find the part number then either order one from JD or pop the number into Oregon, Prime Line, Rotary or Stens on line searches to see is they have an after market one that will be good & not a factory reject as per what is sold on ebay & amazon.
