I have a john deere 420 that creeps when its in neutral. I have the repair manual and I have done all the adjustments it says to do, I adjusted the brakes, the turnbuckle that keeps it in neutral, and the friction of the hydrostat. One problem is when you have it in gear its supposed to go back to neutral if you step on the brake but it doesnt, it gets real close but not all the way. One shop told me it needs a new pump and it may be 700$. Any help would be appreciated.

There should be some adjustment for the brake linkage that pushes the selector back into neutral.... or is it failing to reach neutral from both forward & reverse??
There are some linkage pieces that will ware and cause that, but it would not be the pump. :smile:KennyV

OK I understand that. So do I start replacing parts in the shifter or do I look further into the pump?
I'm just wondering if thats why its creeping from a worn out pump?

Replacing parts is the last thing I would do, and then Only if I determined that they were not correct and could not be brought back to original tolerances...

How many hours are on this machine? :smile:KennyV

Then what am I doing wrong to not be able to get it to stop creeping? I've hard it all apart twice to adjust it and it not perfect either time, even though this last time its pretty close. I've been told its a 88 and it has 1100 hours on it. I've put about 40 on it.

if you adjust the linkage so it favors slightly towards reverse rather than the top edge of neutral... it should work perfectly... :smile:KennyV

Check the transmission shaft. Make sure the arms setscrew hasn't vibrated loose from the shaft going into the transmission.
