Hi everybody, a friend ask me to put this on your site in hopes of getting his 318 running again. He said it has sat for almost a year, and when he turns the key it just clicks. Here is what he has replaced so far.

1 pto switch
2 neutral safety switch
3 light switch
4 battery

Here are the #'s he took off the tractor and engine.

JD 318 1986
MOO318X368729

Motor
863 96 4535

I would like to help him also but due to other jobs and time I don't think I can get down there as much as I would like. I know it could be a lot of things but I guess what I am asking where to start for him and then follow thru with other checks. Well thanks for your time and hope to hear from you.

I would have said #4 would fix it. Make sure battery is charged and a good battery.

Check solenoid

Not enough amps to starter to turn engine...engine is not frozen...right

Poor mans tool kit.
1 can of starter fluid
2 in line spark tester.

Install spark tester & crank engine .
If it flashes you are getting a spark
Remove the plug and clean it with the starter fluid then blow it dry
Reinstal, remove air filter . give the mower a short shot of starter fluid.
If it fires then continue giving it short shots for a minute or so.
If it starts and continuse to run there is a fuel supply problem.

If it does not start there is a valve or timing problem.

I don't think the engine froze up and it is a new battery

New batteries can be bad.
Did you check it? Check battery connects...both positive and negative... or bad battery wire?

Try to jump start it with another battery? short across solenoid? or...put red of jumpers right on starter and see if it turns over.
