John Deere 265 lawn mower

I have an early 80s JD 265 lawn mower that stalled last week. Have changed battery, twice, spark plug, rebuilt carb but it still won't turn over. When I jump it with the truck starts and runs good, dies when cables removed. Could it be the electric mower drive clutch that is causing this?
 
It has a starter relay check it, and make sure you have battery volts at post 86 on the relay from key switch (purple wire)
