hey everyone, I have a 1987 john deere 214 with a issue that I cant seem to get an answer to, I had a spark problem, changing everything from the ignition switch, to the points, ok, now the issue I have now, is the little push rod that pushes the points open will not move when the engine cranks. I pulled the rod out and it moves freely, is there a reason why it wont move when cranking ???

Post all numbers from engine please.

http://www.wfmfiles.com/download/manuals/SM2105 (Oct-76).pdf see if this manual will help you out. Clean out gas tank, fuel lines, replace fuel filter, sounds like you have contaminated fuel after sitting for several years, also check gas cap vent making sure it is not stopped up. Always use fresh gas & you may want to add fuel stabilizer to gas can per instructions on bottle before fueling gas container.

Model k321aqs. Spec 60318. Serial 1634909484. A little history on this, it hasn't ran in 3-4 years. Like I said I replaced the coil, plug, points. The rod I had issues with, now functions. Was running really rough, so I took the carburetor apart and cleaned it up, cleaned the needles, readjusted it. Purred like a kitten. Very proud of myself. Shut it down, came back out 2 hrs later and tried starting it and it runs like a tank, and trying to die. Another question I have, is I took the fuel pump off and replaced the gasket. Is there a wrong way to slip the fuel pump back in ?

Usually it is because the points rod has worn past its useable length.
Also it needs to be pushed against the cam by the points spring.
