john deere 14sb 21" push mower transmission isssue

i have a 14sb 5 speed self-propelled john Deere push mower
and have taken the transmission apart and cleaned out all the dirty grease, and was wondering if any one has a recommendation for what type of grease to use.
seems like the old grease was gasoline resistant, and soft
i tried some Castrol poly blue, but it seams to thick, hard to turn the shafts, quite tacky, and thick

any help would be greatly appreciated
 
I wish you had gotten an answer to this question. I'm researching this now as I'm tearing down my 2nd transmission just as a maintenance item. 30 years of service; it's due...
