have a problem with grass packing up under the deck on my gt245 54 inch deck- have to put it up on ramps every time i use it and clean it out-takes about a halfhour with a large scraper blade and small bar- hard to get out-- cutting height is 3 1/2 inches- is this to high- am using the std blades that came on it, would another type such as gator blades work better- love the tractor hate the deck-never had a mower that clogged the deck up after one mowing before- appreciate all ideas- maybe a smaller deck would work better? thanks jimbo:frown:

First things I'd check are:

- Paint has worn off the underside of the deck and the exposed metal is allowing grass to stick. Once a thin layer sticks, it builds up pretty quickly.

Solution = repaint underside of the deck, perhaps finishing with a coat of automotive wax. There are also some products on the market specifically made to help prevent grass build-up.

- Deck has been bent out of shape and thus, the aerodynamic flow of grass clippings is adversely affected, causing grass to catch and build up in places it isn't supposed to.

Solution = bend it back into shape?

Some build-up is normal but you shouldn't have to use a scraper and bar... that sounds like a LOT.

I agree with Muhammad, there must be something wrong under the deck...
Or ... you are not running the engine at a high enough RPM to discharge the grass.

You might also look into a high lift blade.
I have never had a clog problem on any 3 blade deck, my smallest is a 44 inch Cub Cadet and the largest 84 inch... :smile:KennyV

just bought some "gator blades" and some deck spray from Baileys- will update this post when i can get them on and evaluate- deck is not bent, run mower speed at max when I mow, have had three riding mowers and this is the first to do this. It really packs bad for whatever the reason-cutting height is 3.5 inches-- does anyone else with a john deere gt245 with a 54 inch deck have this prob?----have to clean this out everytime it is used.

I had the same problem with my 42" deck,i had clean it sometimes twice in a mowing session.Wet and dewy grass was the worst.
The deck was rusted badly underneath, last winter i scraped it clean and aplied a couple coats of "por-15"" rust paint ( garanteed not to chip, or peel off)
Mowing was a breeze last summer,no clogging experienced.
