how does a faulty voltage regulator cause the engine to overheat?

Sounds like the voltage regulators are shorting out to ground. It would had been nice which one they are as these engine used either a 15/20 amp or 30 amp. The 15/20 is the older style that has been fairly reliable and 30 amp is a new version.
