Was mowing my yard today and my 3 year-old JD E100 mower suddenly cut off and I could smell smoke. Took a look at the engine and noticed smoke coming from the carburetor solenoid wiring when attempting to crank it. We’ve ordered a replacement part but I was wondering what could have caused this? The air filter looked pretty rough so we changed that out. We also noticed some soot-looking buildup around the wiring connector. Pic attached.
I was wondering if anyone had any input on this issue and how to prevent it?

That makes 5 that I have heard about this year, and the second one this week on this very forum.
You had a short at the solenoid
Not particularly common but does happen
check the plug that goes into the solenoid
The wires may need to be replaced

It happens especially with the Ruixing carbs. It is the reason I have the terminals and housings for repairing this damage. These solenoid short out and we are just very lucky they don't cause a major gas fire.
