Isn't manifold a misnomer?

I have a 16.5 HP B&S engine in my Murray lawn tractor. According to the B&S manual, the part connecting the carburetor to the cylinder head is call the intake manifold. However, a manifold is defined as "a pipe or chamber branching into several openings.". Since there's only one opening, shouldn't it be call a unifold or something indicating that there's only one opening?
