Is Champion Spark Plug CJ8Y an acceptable replacemet for CJ8?

If you can't buy a cj8, cross it over to another brand. Plain old school copper plugs are perfectly fine for mowers.

Also recommend non-resistor plugs if you can find them. These weak push mower and tiller types create terribly weak spark.

the CJ8Y has a projected nose. You'd have to make sure it doesn't hit the piston etc..

edit: I see others have already mentioned it on page 1, and how to use clay to check for interference.
