The title says it all - I've done this many times over the years without a problem. I mowed for about 20 minutes and clouds of smoke emerged intermittently, sometimes thick, sometimes misty. I had run it briefly once or twice this year before I did the changes and it was OK. I don't think I overfilled it, but that is a possibility - I checked the oil level later and it was down a little. Help!

run it for a little bit, get it up to operating temp, shut it down, and then remove the dipstick, if you see whisps of smoke coming out of the dipstick tube, you probably blew a head gasket between the push rod galleys and oil is getting into the combustion chamber.
Yes, that test verified it 
They had the gasket in stock at a local Weingartz, $20.

Had to buy a feeler gauge and some permatex, probably total cost came close to $40.
Turned out to be a lot easier than I expected. Finished before the grass needed mowing again, no parts left over.
