I rebuilt my 18.5 Intek Briggs and Strattion. The connecting rob broke from being to low on oil. I put it back together and it wouldn't start. I took it back apart thinking I had timing off it was correct. I have checked valves, new flywheel key and I am at a loss.

It will need spark at the right time, fuel and compression. We'll take care of the fuel problem later. For now remove the spark plug, replace the plug wire and hold the threaded portion against the head. While it's there hold your thumb or finger as tight as you can on the plug hole and have someone crank it. If it has enough compression you won't be able to hold your thumb/finger on the hole. At exactly the same time your thumb or finger is blown from the hole you should see spark. Not a half second later or sooner but within a hundredth of a second + or -.

Fuel - if it passes the above test put a tea spoon of gasoline into the carburetor throat. It should fire.

Need some more info.

It could be you havent built something back together properly.
What does the engine do when turning the key?
Has it got spark?
What did you set the valve clearances to?
Have you cleaned the fuel system?

 What procedure did you use to set the valves and did you align the marks on the crank and cam gears?

I even went tore it back down to check the timing marks. I opened the exhaust valve and then checked the lash on the intake. Then I repeated the same procedure for the exhaust.

 Incorrect valve lash procedure. Go to briggsandstratton.com, click on support, put valve lash intek engine in the search section and then click valves.

I went and bought a new fuel filter and plug. Put plug in and it fired right up. The old plug broke so I had put one in from my dirtbike. It would ark on the frame but I guess it wasn't enough spark for combustion. Thanks everyone for all your help!!!!!!!

This summer, in the middle of mowing season, I had the exact same problem. My engine just wouldn't start. I pulled the plug, checked for spark and it did have spark. Put it back in and still nothing. Put a brand new plug in and it fired right up. The old plug wasn't sparking under compression...
