After a lot of research here and elsewhere I splurged and bought a Toro 20099 with the Kohler engine.

1) Due to many factors and I know it's a bad idea but, I just had to cut my yard after 3 weeks. Tried it at the normal setting (~3 inches); in some areas the grass was was 8 inches tall. Sure, I had a little clumping on turns and when I stopped to move lawn furniture, but it never stalled or clogged. What a beast!

2) I just got a recall for three transmission screws that may cause a problem. For my inconvenience, they are extending my transmission warranty another year, to a full 6 years. Seeing as how that was what failed on my last (non-Toro) mower that caused me to be in the market, I love it.

Will post later on how my dealer handles my recall during the summer busy season.

I feel it was well worth the money. Of course now I'll want to throw down another $100 for the best tires when I need new ones, buy the most powerful welder when I buy one, etc.

It just shows that just because some people don't like something it doesn't mean it is bad... But in most cases it is!

What size engine do you have ?

The Toro 200099 looks a lot like my Mountfield SP414 (in my avatar).

Is it self propelled ?

I don't have the engine manual out, but it's an odd number, I think 173 cc and it is overhead valve. Yes, it is self-propelled, personal pace which is great.

173CC is quite good for a mower! My mower is only 100CC, but it copes fine with the light work I use it for.

UPDATE; I just got my mower back from the recall fix. It took a couple of days, but this is their busy season. Just for the record, my Toro Dealer is Land and Coates on Bonney Road in Virginia Beach VA. I am pleased with their sales and service and heartily recommend them. Now if it'll quit raining for a whole day ...

As posted above, it was subject to a recall by Toro because there had been some problems with the transmission mounting. I had not encoutered a problem and choose to not wait, because that would be when they were absolutely slammed and the grass was growing about 1/2 inch a day! The mower has been going strong all summer and I like it.

Is anybody aware of the differences in construction between the engines that Toro formerly used (Briggs and Tecumseh) and the Kohler engine? I'd be curious to know.
