have a mtd yard machines with a briggs 6 hp. shut off with no spark. checked cont. at ign. coil from the plug to ground (wire unplugged) that goes to the lever you pull to start it that would supply a ground i would assume. With wire unplugged i got .7 ohm which is not great but enough i would think. bought new coil and checked before installing that leed to the coil and it was ofl. not continuety. at least i thought. installed and tried starting. checked resistance again and found the same .7 or so ohm between that leed to the coil ground again. What am i missing here? The flywheel looks like it should be magnetic on both sides but is only on one. Has electric starter and would guess the mower was made between 1999 and 2002. Any help would be great!

Hello & WELCOME to LMF...
I'm not following what wire you are checking..?
You do realize that the wire at the key switch supplies ground to the magneto to kill, (shut off) the engine...

I think that the wire from the switch likely is grounding somewhere between the coil and the switch. Trace that wire and look for breaks in the insulation.

too busy to mess with it today. the ign. coil has the spark plug wire and a male spade connector. there is a wire that plugs into that male spade connector coming from a plastic piece that is gounded or un grounded when the lever is open or when you close the lever in order to start the engine (along with the cable another arm it operates). it seems to provide no ground when the lever is closed ( held to the handle) as if to trying to start it. even when that wire is unplugged from the ign coil there is still no spark.

'THAT' wire is the kill wire... when ground IS applied it kills the engine... :smile:KennyV
