I have a LT 1000 917.271831 that throws transmission belt

I bought a used LT 1000 21.0 hp 42 inch mower. At the time I did not realize that the draw bar back plate was missing. Just to give you an idea,,with the draw bar missing you can see
the transmission pulley with belt. The problem is that if you try to press down on the clutch/break all the way while mowing, it throws the belt off the transmission pulley. By playing with the
pressure to apply to the clutch/break I can keep the belt from coming off just by barely engaging it to stop and to shift to another gear. What I want to know is that if I buy the draw bar and put it on,
will that stop the belt from coming off the pulley? i have looked for repair manuals for this mower, but I guess they don't exist outside the Sears repair world. I have the owners manual,,,but what I need
is a repair manual. Does anyone have any information about what I seek here?

The back plate should not have anything to do with the transmission belt. If the previous owner took that plate off, perhaps they also removed the belt guide that keeps the belt in place. I don't know what model you have but I don't recall ever seeing a belt guide attached to a back plate. The owner's manual should have a parts list that you'll need to look at and look under the mower to determine if anything is missing. Is the belt very loose when the drive system is not engaged? How about when the clutch is depressed? If so, it may be possible that the wrong belt is on there. Do you know where under the mower the belt is coming off at?

If you driving the mover and push down on clutch,,,you can see the belt back off from the transmission pulley. I see on belt guide on each side of the pulley but there is not one to keep the belt from just jutting out the back of the pulley. I dont know if it has the right belt on it, but I have bought what is suppose to be the right one. I have also bought the back plate as well. I guess i will have the belt put on and see what happens.

If that action spits the belt loose, then the belt is "too big". That can be from a few things:
1) correct belt but fouled/jammed/inoperative idler pulley to absorb the belt tension when disengaged
2) incorrect belt
3) as mentioned, missing alignment bars which usually are small 1/4" rod that is bent in a "U" configuration near the pulley.
4) missing/broken idler pulley return spring.
Which end of the belt is being spit free? Can you tell? Transmission end or engine end?

It spits out down at the transmission end,,,u press down on the clutch and it looks like a tongue coming out of the transmission pulley :)

I guess I am just trying to make sure if I put a new belt on and that back plate on,,,that i wont have to take the back plate off again due to it coming off again just as soon
as i got it back on and buttoned up.

I will check all the idle pulley springs as well

Sure sounds like the wrong belt is on there.

The fact that the back plate is off at all suggests that this is not a new problem to this machine. Assuming that you are confident that the belt number you have is correct for your exact machine, I would guess that if you carefully go through the belt track, somewhere along there you'll find something amiss. Missing pulley, missing alignment bar, or something else but if the belt is "correct" then that leaves only the pathway to be incorrect.

I had the same problem with the one I have , belts over time will streach out overtime .if your unsure get your model number and go to the repair clinic they have the same parts as sears but a lot cheaper

I had the same problem with mine ever since I replaced the belt a year and half ago. I got tired of having to take my draw bar plate off to get it back on. So I took the deck off and crawled under it. The belt seemed way to loose so I adjusted the brake rod. The belt is now tight and so far so good on the belt staying on.

Yeah forget this tip it's still coming off.

Just curious what kind of slack you are getting in the belt when you take tension off while the mower is not running? You should only get enough slack to allow the pulley to slip, not shoot out several inches "like a tongue" I believe you said. Is it possible the belt may be on wrong? Look all under it while the tension is off the belt and take your hand and move the belt around and see what you find. Hope this helps.
