need to change hydro oil. i have a 1988 721 gasoline kubota engine. yes its gasoline mist people think it should b a diesel even the dealer. lol
cant find hydro oil where i live that iz either grasshopper brand or mobil dte 26. as suggested by manual.
even grasshopper dealer does not use the brand. i guess bc they sell and service others too.
my question is ....i have reAD Where mobil 1 can b used in place of hydro oil. anyone tried this.
btw i have the hydro gear with 2 filters. company says that distinguishes which one i have idk
i need 2.5 gallons so the cost is going to b high either way

I just changed mine, the new Mobile # is DTE 10 Excel 100 this is the oil recomended by my Grasshopper dealer as well as Grasshopper. Mobile no longer make the old number listed in your owners manual.

I would search the Mobile web site I'm sure they would have a dealer locator tab. I actually bought mine from a local petroleum dealer that was an authorized Mobil dealer, I might add I had to buy in 5 gallon container. I'm sure I'm telling you something you already know but be sure to change filters at the same time.

Thanks I will try that. I know I saw on Internet somewhere where they sold 5 gal for around $100. Grainger won't tell me the price of shipping but I am not sure if they sell it in 5 gal
Yea, I already have two OEM filters from dealer last time I was there. Not only is the dealer an hour away but they do not sell the mobil oil nor the grasshopper oil. They said its a substitute.

Yes the $100.00 is about right it seems I may have paid slightly more. I guess I'm lucky to have a excelent dealer 10 minutes away and a second dealer 30 minutes away that will deliver parts at least twice a week to our small community. There are a lot of Grasshoppers in our area which helps to keep the dealers going. By the way my 721 is also liquid cooled gas also, I can't complain about it except I have the manual fold deck and would like to upgrade to a power fold someday.

Believe we have same mower. Mine too is manual. Only part I hate about that is taking blades off or trying to clean underneath. Other than that have been pretty happy with mine. It did require a coil or something like that. Not a starter coil but deeper. Required a timing. I had to have dealer do it and it cost more in labor than part did. Somewhere around $700 total
However now its got a carb issue that if its warm and I stop it on a slight hill it will die when I crank and take off again unless I let it idle on flat surface for a min but then its seems ok.

Ouch $700.00!!! Hope your carb problem dosen't end up that costly. I guess I have been lucky I have only had to replace a few belts and a motor mount. How many hours are on your 721 I have 450 on mine.

i have nearly 1000 hours. I bought it around 650 hours. Yea about $450 was labor. I cant think what they replaced but it was something like a solinoid or distributer. it had gotton moisture in there and rusted. its been a few years. I know they had to do a timing adjustment with the labor. I hope the carb work might be simple and I can do it. Someone suggested could be an evaporator.

I did do a typo in original post Mine is a 1998 721
